What is green hunting?
Green hunting involves stalking the chosen animals and shoot him using a dart gun and a tranquilizer bullet. Using a tranquilizer dart the person can still get the enjoyment of hunting an animal without actually killing it. It does involve a lot more with a qualified veterinarian needing to be present, having to wait and help the animal get back on its feet and having to pay a large fee. There has to be a conservational benefit to the animal for it to be darted.
Where and what is Kwandwe?
Kwandwe is located about an hour’s flight out of Cape Town and is a 20,000 hectare private game reserve.
Why is a qualified Vet employed?
There needs to be a vet on site by law to make sure the darted animals are treated well and are safely roaming the wild again. He is also there to manage the drugs that are used to tranquilize them and put them back up. The vet is paid for by the person going on the game hunt.
How much does a hunt cost?

How long does it take for the drugs to take effect?

Dawie Van Der Westhuizen said that he would kill up to 200 animals in a night. He changed his mind after five years and thought that the animals should have a better chance at life then being shot dead by a person standing 20 meters away.

Green hunting is a very controversial topic the animal can be put in serious danger if it is treated well when it is unconscious, or if it is tranquilized too often. The cocktail of drugs it’s dangerous if they have too much of in their system, it can destroy different organs like the liver and organs ones affect by long term residue.
Do you think that Green Hunting is an effective conservation strategy? Why?
I think that this is a good conservation idea, the animals that are shot by the people paying to do the hunt have to have a medical benefit from it. This means that the owners of the park receive money to help the animals, like having an anti-poaching unit and medicine to help sick animals. This also stops people from killing the animals for fun.
